About Stephen Shelley

Stephen Shelley was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, coach, and mentor to many. Stephen battled brain cancer for 5 years and 8 months. His fight with brain cancer ended at the age of 52. Stephen attended and played football at California State University, Fresno during the 1989 and 1990 football seasons. Stephen broke the record for longest receiving touchdown (91 yards) in Fresno State bowl game history. Stephen later graduated from Fresno State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Studies.

It was at Fresno State that he met his wife Kenya in an African American Studies class. The couple was later married in Fresno, CA in 1998 and added 2 beautiful children to their union (Mi-Angel & Stephen). He utilized his B.S. degree in Liberal Studies, and started a career in education, working as an educator, mentor and coach for both Fresno and Clovis Unified School Districts for over 20 years. Even though Stephen coached football, track, and basketball, he was most known for being a football coach. He started his coaching career as a child by coaching his brothers in street football. In addition to coaching his son in basketball, baseball, and football, he coached and trained a countless number of athletes from elementary age to the pros.

Stephen was baptized at College Church of Christ, in 1997, and was a member of the Church of Christ until his passing. He had strong faith and would speak about giving whatever difficult situation he faced to God. He enjoyed cooking, dancing, watching his children play sports, attending his daughter’s play productions, dance competitions and various sports activities. Stephen also enjoyed watching his nephews and nieces participate in their sports activities and attended every game he possibly could. He had a knack for making something out of nothing. Stephen had an unbelievably optimistic view of life, and his positive attitude is what got him through most of it. His favorite thing to do in life was laugh.
